When Sallie Wolf was in eighth grade she had three career goals—to teach, to work in publishing, and to write and illustrate books for children. Upon graduation from Brown University, Sallie taught anthropology, her major, to high school students. After moving to Chicago, Sallie worked for the University of Chicago Press. When she moved to Oak Park, Sallie decided it was time to tackle her last career goal. She has been writing and making art ever since. Sallie even went back to school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated with a BFA in drawing the same year her oldest son graduated from high school. Sallie has taught art and writing workshops for all ages. She especially likes being able to share her working process, as she did with a 2nd grade class. In addition to reading her picture books, Sallie showed the students collages based on bird sketches from her journals. She read them poems she wrote, based on her observations of birds, and the children made bird collages of their own from recycled materials. “You are a wonderful PRO!” was the response of the teacher. One student wrote, “I liked doing bird collages with you. It was so fun. I finished 3 collages.” Sallie Wolf is the author of Peter's Trucks, (Albert
Whitman, 1992), a rhyming picture book “just right for the vroom
vroom set,” (Kirkus Reviews) and Truck Stuck, (Charlesbridge,
Spring, 2008), a 135 word "terse verse" story about a truck
stuck under a viaduct.The Robin Makes a Laughing Sound: A Birder’s
Journal, illustrated with sketches from her journals, is scheduled
to be published in 2009 (Charlesbridge, Spring 2009).
