Wherever Sallie Wolf goes she brings her journal,
fountain pen, ink, and paints. These are the tools she uses to record the
world she sees. Sometimes she is painting the lake view, sometimes sketching
a bird, sometimes recording the phase and movement of the moon. Keen observation,
a unique perspective, and a youthful imagination guide Sallie's art and
writing. Her creations in turn inspire others to notice and examine
more closely the potential for wonder and creativity that lie all around
us. Sallie Wolf is the author of Truck Stuck,
illustrated by Andy Robert Davies, (Charlesbridge, 2008), and The
Robin Makes a Laughing Sound: A Birder’s Journal, (Charlesbridge,
Spring, 2010), which she both wrote and illustrated. Her first book, Peter's
Trucks, was illustrated by Cat Bowman Smith, (Albert Whitman,
1992). Where do ideas come from? Searching for an idea for a story? Look around! Children will explore everyday experiences that can become the inspiration for their own writing. Even a simple trip to the grocery store or the birds feeding outside the window can be the basis for a story or poetry. (Ideal for younger children.) A Snowy Day--a Winter art and writing workshop: What
does Winter look like? What does Winter smell like? How does it feel,
taste, sound? Using several picture books as inspiration, children will
create poetry and art based on their observations of the season. (This
workshop can be adapted to any season or event.) "You are a wonderful PRO!" was the response of a second-grade teacher. One student wrote, "I liked doing bird collages with you. It was so fun. I finished 3 collages." Sallie lives in Oak Park.
